With the pen strokes of a few generals, the shooting phase of the bloody Korean War that had raged for 3 years, 1 month, and 2 days was ended "quickly, quietly and solemnly" in the span of 10 minutes, according to the on-the-scene report from Stars and Stripes' Bob McNeill at the time.

The signing ceremony was staged in a tar-papered, straw-matted building built especially for the occasion.

Until that moment, however, the fighting was fierce and the costs very real.
