Fake Service Dogs

This is Whiteny. She is a CCI service dog in-training and goes to work in the PVA Publication office in Phoenix with our Web Content manager Christopher DiVirgilio.

For many, a service animal is the only resource between living an independent life or having to rely on family and friends

You’ve all seen them.

The four-legged canines walking in step next to their trusting owners; helping open doors or pulling a wheelchair up a steep incline.  Service animals have become commonplace in society, and in many states are legally allowed into places of business.

In fact, service animals are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act that require businesses and public service organizations to allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals onto business premises in whatever areas customers are generally allowed.

Like with those who try to circumvent the handicapped parking laws, there are those who are passing off their everyday pet as a service dog. This is made possible through the alarming number of Internet companies selling fake service animal capes, collars, and identification material.

Our friends at Canine Companions for Independence, is working to put a halt to this practice but needs your help and support. Join PN Online by telling the Department of Justice that these online sales of fraudulent service animal products needs to stop.
