Probiotic Perks

There are plenty of probiotics in these recipes to help your digestive, urinary and overall health

Probiotics are powerful microorganisms, good bacteria, which boast many health benefits. Specifically for someone with spinal-cord injury or disease, probiotics are great for preventing urinary tract infections, boosting the immune system to reduce infections and help with the efficiency and regularity of your digestive system.

Taking a probiotic via pill is a good idea, but you can also up your probiotic intake with the food you eat. Try adding unsweetened yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut and miso to your diet. These two yogurt-base recipes can get you started:

Peanut Butter and Jelly Yogurt Parfait

1 8-ounce cup plain Greek yogurt

1 tablespoon natural peanut butter

1 tablespoon fruit preserves

1 tablespoon peanut butter granola

4 halved grapes or strawberries (optional)

Place 1/3 of the yogurt in the bottom of a clear glass bowl, cup or jar.

Top the yogurt with the peanut butter, spread to create an even layer.

Add another 1/3 of the yogurt on top of the peanut butter and top that yogurt layer with the fruit preserves.

Top the fruit preserves with the last 1/3 of yogurt and finish by topping with the granola and fruit.

Cinnamon Fruit Dip

1 8-ounce cup plain Greek yogurt

1 teaspoon honey

½ teaspoon cinnamon

1 medium-sized apple

Mix the yogurt, honey and cinnamon in a bowl.

Slice the apple and use to the slices to scoop up the yogurt dip.
