Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) can now be found all over the country

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are becoming increasingly prevalent across the United States, and Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is taking proactive steps to ensure these self-driven vehicles accommodate wheelchair users.

While AVs are gaining popularity as a rideshare option in many cities, there’s a significant gap in their accessibility. PVA Senior Advocacy Attorney Danica Gonzalves points out, “There are currently no wheelchair-accessible AVs in the U.S.”

To address this issue, Gonzalves participated in a beta test ride with Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, in Washington, D.C. on June 17. The test ride took place in one of Waymo’s all-electric Jaguar I-Pace SUVs, which are equipped with multiple external sensors.

Describing her experience, Gonzalves noted, “The ride was only about 10 minutes, and a person was sitting in the driver’s seat, although the car was operating on its own.” This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into the current state of AV technology and its potential for accessibility.

PVA’s efforts extend beyond test rides. Last year, the organization, along with other disability rights groups, submitted a letter to the House of Representatives emphasizing the critical need for accessible AVs. The letter stressed that “this new emerging mode of transportation must be accessible for people with all types of disabilities.”

Looking ahead, PVA remains committed to this cause. A spokesperson for the organization stated, “PVA will continue to work with companies, Congress and the White House on the development and deployment of these vehicles.” This collaborative approach aims to ensure that as AV technology advances, it evolves to meet the needs of all potential users, including those with mobility challenges.

The push for accessible AVs represents a significant step towards more inclusive transportation options. As these vehicles become more common on American roads, the efforts of organizations like PVA will be crucial in shaping a future where autonomous transportation is truly accessible to all.
