NWBA Establishes Military Division for Service Members
The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) has announced the creation of its Military Division through a unanimous Board vote. This new division creates opportunities for veterans and active-duty personnel in wheelchair basketball.
The Military Division emerged from a two-year development process, building on wheelchair basketball’s military origins in 1946, when World War II veterans at VA hospitals and Corona Naval Station pioneered the sport. The NWBA’s establishment followed in 1948 with its first National Tournament.
NWBA Hall of Famer and Military Division Commissioner Lee Montgomery emphasizes the division’s significance for veterans with TBI and PTSD, noting its role in reconnecting service members in a supportive environment.
Former NWBA Board member and paralyzed veteran Mark Shepherd highlights the division’s return to the organization’s roots, creating opportunities for service members who helped establish the sport.
The division features multiple competitive levels, specialized resources, and dedicated events for military athletes. The third annual Military Division National Championship will take place April 25-27 at Turnstone.
The NWBA welcomes support through financial sponsorships, event volunteering, and program advocacy. Additional information is available at www.nwba.org/militarydivision.
